OUR PRESERVATION WORK

Calaway Cemetery

Sugar Hill, Gwinnett County, Georgia

A Small Family Cemetery

Calaway Cemetery is a small family cemetery enclosed by a hand-laid stone wall. The two known burials are those of John Calaway (1804–1891) and his wife, Elizabeth Cooper Calaway (1808–1896).

The cemetery is located at the intersection of Suwanee Dam Road and Buford Dam Road in Sugar Hill, Georgia.

Preserving the Cemetery

During several workdays in September and October 2019, chapter members and community volunteers cleared overgrown vegetation, small trees, leaves, and debris from the cemetery, its stone walls, and the surrounding grounds. They cleaned the headstones and ground vaults and placed new pea gravel throughout the site.

Volunteers also installed an iron entrance gate to replace one that had long been missing. The Suwanee Creek Chapter, NSDAR, and the Gwinnett Historical Society installed a new cemetery sign as part of the preservation project.
